Job Description

The Culinary Specialist oversees operations of the food program, including hygiene, meal
planning and preparation, food distribution to rooms, record keeping, and all kitchen operations; ensures adherence to Child Care Food Program and/or USDA guidelines and all public health regulations regarding food storage and preparation.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepares nutritious meals and snacks for enrolled children;

  • Ensure food is hygienically stored and food storage area are keep clean;

  • Practices safe food handling techniques in food preparation and storage;

  • Plans and purchases all food and necessary supplies needed to provide food services;

  • Ensure that high standards of hygiene and safety are maintained at all times in the kitchen through daily cleaning and monitoring kitchen equipment;

  • Maintaining freezers and refrigerators at the correct temperature;

  • Distributes food to the classrooms;

  • Adhere to and stay current on Food and Nutritional Guidelines of Preschool set by USDA, DCF and any other governing agency during the preparation, cooking and serving of all food;

  • Produce, maintain and complete Monthly USDA Report;

  • Prepare, distribute, and maintain monthly menus;  Create and maintain processes for Culinary area;

  • Assist in classroom/playground as coverage;

  • Maintain laundry within the facility;

  • Maintain or assist in cleaning the facility;  Attend monthly staff meetings;  Other duties as assigned.


Education, Certifications, & Work-Related Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent;

  • 45-hour Part 1 & 2 (Introduction to Childcare);

  • Must have active and current CPR/First Aid Certification

  • Food Service Certification.


Skill Requirements:

  • Must be detail-oriented;

  • Must be proficient in the English language;

  • Good written and verbal communication skills

  • Demonstrates initiative and ability to solve problems       

  • Functionally familiar with Microsoft software (desirable).

General Requirements:

  • Must successfully clear background check;

  • Must be able to work independently with little or no supervision.

  • A willingness to share the Christian faith; 

  • Must be motivated to learn and grow in an educational environment, and be willing to continually increase knowledge;

  • Must be willing to work in a team environment; be willing to share ideas, be open to others’ ideas, be flexible and willing to compromise

  • Must accommodate a flexible work schedule as required          

  • Ability to maintain confidentially.

Physical Requirements:

  • Regular to frequent lifting (up to 50 lbs.)

  • Sufficiently fit and able to regularly perform bending, stooping, stretching, squatting, pushing, pulling, sitting and walking

  • Be able to work in all types of environments         

  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time    

  • Tolerate noise levels which can be moderate to loud.
